[ Wei Ying just made it so easy. From the moment they started this journey together, side by side and hand in hand and looking over Sizhui, he had made everything so easy. Even as he whirled into their lives like a hurricane, leaving parts of him everywhere in his wake and especially in Wangji’s heart, it all had felt so natural and normal from the beginning. A puzzle piece, slotting into place.
So this feels natural, too, the expected next step. At least, it does for Wangji. He’d asked Xichen for his opinion and had gotten a soft, gentle look, a shoulder squeeze, and a follow your heart. Which he is doing.
So he stands here for a moment in front of Wei Ying, before he takes a deep breath, and bends down on one knee, slow and measured. He’s not trying to shock Wei Ying, and he knows this is old fashioned, but cliches are cliches for a reason.
And here, by the river, he goes down on one knee for Wei Ying, thinks of the words he rehearsed, and discards them. ]
Wei Ying. I love you. I’ve loved you since the day we met. You are everything I didn’t know I wanted, or needed. You - complete me. And so -
[ Simple words, maybe too simple, but Wangji can’t pretend to be a poet.
With his free hand, he pulls out the ring box and opens it with a flick of his thumb. ]
[ up until this point in his life, Wei Ying had been more than happy to simply go where life took him. to follow the winds of change that might push and pull him through life. was happy being something of a wanderer in all the things, sure he had a home and family but-- he never really felt the need to stay. to be still. not until Wangji at least. all this time with Wangji made Wei Ying feel free in a way that he never thought possible, even if he was technically not moving at all.
this life with Wangji that he was building was everything he ever wanted. more than he thought himself worthy of at times. until Wangji stops in the middle of their walk and looks at Wei Ying like that, like he is the entire world. the only thing he needs. then Wei Ying has a hard time tamping down on the swell of adoration he feels. finds himself cocking his head at Wangji as he stands there and he is leaning in to kiss Wangji until--
until Wangji goes down. measured and slow and Wei Ying's brain catches on itself because is he--
is Wangji actually--
will you marry me.
there are more words, before that, words that Wei Ying is sure will make him cry later (not that he isn't almost crying now) but he can just hear that question on repeat in his head while his ice cream falls to the ground because Wangji is on his knees with a goddamned ring and nothing else matters but--]
You actual, stupidly perfect man. Fuck, yes. [ the words are wet and mumbled as Wei Ying all but tackles Wangji where he kneels, uncaring about everything except getting his lips on Wangji's to mutter yes a million more times.] Yes, yes I will marry you.
[ For a moment, everything is suspended in time, as Wangji looks at Wei Ying, with these words having just left his lips and his hands trembling around the ring box. For a moment, nothing happens, everything frozen as he watches Wei Ying and there's the distant, horrible possibility that Wei Ying will say no, but then, time starts ticking again.
Time starts ticking again, and Wei Ying is stumbling down to his knees, scrambling to grab onto Wangji. But he's saying yes, he's saying yes, and Wangji holds on to him right back, a little overwhelmed, a lot overwhelmed, actually. ]
Yeah? [ He asks, a little breathlessly, feeling stupid about it, but he's laughing too, wet and disbelieving, reaching back to take hold of Wei Ying's hand, slide the ring on. ]
I know it's early on, I know, but I'm so - I'm so deadly serious about you. I love you so much.
[ as if there was some universe where Wei Ying would say no to Wangji (there is, when his mind is clouded with resentment and fury and madness brought unto himself, but no right-minded Wei Ying says no). he understands that it has been so little time, that it is barely a year at all when other people look at it, but Wei Ying has never felt something like this in all of his years, has never felt as if home was in the bones and blood of another person the way he does with Wangji. has never felt like he was at peace like he did when he was with Wangji.
his laughter and tears are muffled against Wangji's neck for only a moment before he is pulling back enough to kiss him, soft and adoring, while the ring is slide onto his finger. when Wei Ying turns to look at it, he is sure that his smile will split his face in two.]
You are-- fuck, Wangji, you have been it since day one for me. [ and he means that, no matter how cliched, he really does. another laugh, this one tucked against Wangji's jaw. ] Love you, so much.
[ There may be a universe where Wangji doesn't feel the depth of feelings he feels now. Maybe - he would find it hard to believe if he was told such a thing, but it is possible. However, it is not the universe they live in, and it will never be,
When Wei Ying kisses him, Wangji chases his lips, his heart beating so loud it feels like it's about to crack his chest open, but in the very best way. The only way he ever wants to know. ]
I have not told Sizhui about this, [ he says softly between the two of them. ] I wanted us to tell him together if you said yes.
[ Then, he smiles bigger, one of the rarest of his smiles, full blown, exposing his teeth. ]
But first, you and I can celebrate. You dropped your ice-cream.
[ Wei Ying's heart beats just as loud, just as strong against his ribs. makes him feel like he ran a marathon, the elation is there as well, he feels like he is on top of the world right now. even while the cold seeps into his legs, all he can feel is the warmth of Wangji right here before him, the weight of his words on his shoulders and the new weight of precious metal against his finger.
his laughter is hard to contain, as are the kisses he peppers along the skin of Lan Zhan's neck and jaw.] If I said yes, you are-- god Wangji there is no one else on this earth that I would ever want to be with, no one else in this universe I am sure. So yeah, we can tell Sizhui together.
[ he cups his hands around Wangji's jaw, presses their forehead's together and tries to imprint this memory, the joy on Wangji's face, to memory forever. ]
I don't need more ice cream, I would much rather do this celebrating you speak of.
[ With careful movements, Wangji maneuvers them to stand once more, pressed together like they are the only people in the street, the city - the entire world. They're right under a lamplight, and the overhead light makes Wei Ying look like he's glowing, beautiful - so beautiful.
His hands framing Wei Ying's face, Wangji shakes his head. ] You could have a million reasons to say no. Or not yet. But - I'm glad you didn't. I'm glad you said yes.
[ Another smile, and then he's pulling Wei Ying into a kiss, a proper one, not caring that there are passer-bys, that they're not completely alone. He's not one for PDA, but in some instances, he truly doesn't care.
Afterwards, he stays close, the toes of their boots touching. ]
Ah, Lan Wangji, I only have a million reasons to say yes.
[ Wei Ying moves easily, happy to stand with Wangji as long as he wants, wrapped around him with the world fading. because this was all that mattered to him, Lan Wangji with his arms around him and smile on his face. Wei Ying will do whatever he can to keep that smile on Wangji's face, for as long as he can. makes it a personal mission.
and if kissing him in the middle of the street is one way to do that, then so be it. that is what Wei Ying will do. not that he cares about public displays of affection, more than happy to let Wangji do whatever he wants whenever he wants. wants to show off to the world that this beautiful man has chosen him to bestow his affections upon. his laughter is light against Wangji's lips as he lingers, arms sliding around Wangji's waist to keep him close while the smile on his face turns wicked. ]
Well, husband to be, I can think of a few things that might be great celebration. But I dare not be presumptuous.
[ teasing, perhaps. which is the route his goes, leaning in and pressing a kiss against the hollow of Wangji's throat before nosing to the collar of his sweater beneath. ]
[ The proposal, he means. Wangji feels like it's been a long time coming, an inevitability for him, who did like convention to the extent, who did like to do the right thing, and who wants to give himself, and Sizhui, a proper family.
Wei Ying is an intrinsic part of family now, to Wangji.
At the kisses and words, Wangji huffs out a soft laugh, and then tips his head to the side a tiny bit, moving his hands to curl them into the back of Wei Ying's jacket. ]
At this point, I think you can dare to be presumptuous. And also, we probably should take this home.
[ did he expect it? not at all. that wasn't to say he didn't want it, or that he was honestly all that surprised by it either, because it didn't quite work that way in his heart. he never expected Wangji to propose, but it is not surprising to him that he did. he also wanted to part of Wangji's family, has for a long while, he just-- didn't think that he would get it. not like this.
this is perfect though.
Wei Ying smiles, all the more radiant when Wangji curls his fingers in his jacket. tells him they should go home. he agrees, presses one more kiss to Wangji's lips before he takes a step back, just enough. ] You think so? Ah, Wangji, home sounds good. Fantastic even, you can tell me how you wish to celebrate on the way back, see if they are better than my own ideas.
No? Oh. [ That's surprising, to Wangji, who truly thinks he wasn't really all that subtle about any of it. But it's nice, too, to know that Wei Ying still can get surprised by Wangji. ]
Well. I'm glad.
[ He lets out a little satisfied noise, before he starts walking again, but this time, a lot more determined, a lot faster than they were earlier. He keeps his hand tight around Wei Ying, pulling him towards the car park they left the car at.
And once they're back at the car, only then does Wangji allow himself to pull Wei Ying into another kiss, but this one longer, harder than the one earlier was. Full of untold desire. ]
We're getting married, [ he whispers against Wei Ying's lips as he crowds him against the side of the car, not having made it inside just yet, too impatient. ]
[ this was something that Wei Ying really could only have dreamed of before. even in the beginning, when he and Wangji were just dating (and barely at that) he felt as if he was home. at peace. that with Wangji there was nothing that he would ever want for again as long as he was able to stay by his side. this was the logical conclusion but-- at the same time it wasn't what Wei Ying saw coming.
following along with Wangji as they make their way back to the car, Wei Ying finds himself laughing. their fingers are tangled and he just wants to yell as loud as he can how this amazing man has decided that he wants to be with him forever. how this man is his and his alone and--]
Wangji--!
[ his laughter is smothered into the kiss, turns into a moan at the hunger he can feel burning between them. it is always there, the desire and want, but there are times when Wei Ying is certain that it will consume him. and with the way Wangji is kissing him now, the way he crowds against him and holds him like this, it certainly feels like one of those times. he slides his hands around Wangji's shoulders, fingers at the nape of his neck to keep him close, licks into Wangji's mouth and shivers.
the kiss doesn't really break, but Wei Ying speaks quietly against his lips.] Mmm, we are. Will get to call you mine and show you off to everyone soon enough.
[ Maybe it simply was the way they'd been raised. Wangji had grown in the shade of discipline and tradition, and despite shaking some of it off over the years, despite his uncle's disapproval in the most important choices Wangji made - namely, Sizhui, and Wei Ying - Wangji still had a desire to comply with some tradition.
And he likes the idea of being married. Of knowing that Wei Ying is his, fully and entirely. Not that Wangji believes he's not, right now, but he likes the promise. he likes the commitment. He likes the heft of it and what it means.
He smiles a little into the kiss, knowing it's unlike him to do such a thing in public, once again. Twice in one night is really out there, for Lan Wangji, but he is jubilant, right now, and he can't quite hide it.
When they pull back, just enough to talk, Wangji huffs a breath of laughter. ]
You can already do that.
[ And, truly, Wei Ying can, and has in the past. But soon enough, he'll be able to call Wangji husband, and Wangji will be able to call Wei Ying the same, and that, that changes things.
Freeing a hand, Wangji opens the passenger door of the car, to let Wei Ying inside. ]
[ tradition was something that Wei Ying never really had any inclination to follow, he would respect it when it was to be respected but it wasn't something he went after. but to marry Lan Wangji? that was something he could look forward to. something that he would adore and fight for if the need be. he is aware that there are those that do not like his relationship with Wangji, but-- well that just meant that Wei Ying had to prove them wrong. prove that he was the best possible match for Wangji.
he likes to think that him being able to make Wangji smile the way he is right now, the way he will laugh against his lips while still pressed close means that he is. that this is something perfect. Wei Ying keeps smiling, even as he chases Wangji's lips. seeing if he can make it three times he can kiss the other before they are in the car.]
Hmmm, you're right I can. Just as you can call me yours, but I think being able to say 'this is my husband, Lan Wangji' has quite a nice ring to it, don't you think?
[ clearly Wei Ying likes the sound of it, even if he does slide into the car (not without one last pack, to the corner of Wangji's lips).]
I am all for making a scene, you must know this by now, but-- home sounds better.
[ There would be times where he would have to respect it, if he's to join the Lan family. That makes Wangji wonder - will Wei Ying want to change his name? Expect Wangji to change his own? They can both keep their names, but Wangji would like to keep the same family name as Sizhui.
Little things. Little things they'll have to talk about, make sure they're both happy with everything. Together. ]
Mn. [ It does have a nice ring to it, that much is true. It makes Wangji feel warm, from head to toe, his ears feeling hot. He hums again when Wei Ying kisses him again and slips into the car, Wangji closing the door behind him.
He walks over to the driver's seat and settles in, taking his time. ]
You know I don't mind if you cause a scene, but some things I'd rather keep to myself.
[ those are all details that have not even begun to develop in Wi Ying's mind, right now he is caught up in the idea that Lan Wangji wants to marry him. that he wants to have Wei Ying in a way that is so very meaningful. there were some that would look down on the idea of marriage, and more that would argue it no longer meant forever, but for Wei Ying-- it was forever. with Lan Wangji, it was forever.
Wei Ying is still laughing as the door closes, as Wangji moves around to the other side of the car to slide in himself. as soon as he is settled, Wei Ying finds his hand and tangles their fingers together, squeezing.]
Some things you like keeping to yourself? Like what, Wangji? Do you think I am so shameless I would let you bend me over the hood of the car? [ he feigns innocence for a beat, eyes wide before it falls off and he grins.] Because you're right, I am shameless enough for that.
[ it was a thing he is sure would never happen, not with how controlled Wangji usually was outside of the home, but Wei Ying still liked to tease. ]
[ That's the part Wangji is good at - thinking things through. He's already laid out quite a number of thoughts and contingency plans before he even proposed, lying awake in bed in the middle of the night thinking about it. He's not one to lose sleep over much, so he knew that this was bound to be one of most important things he was ever going to do.
Now, does he wish he'd had a more grandiose plan? Maybe, a little. But it's the result that matters the most.
Amused, he nods at Wei Ying's words, driving out of the parking lot. ]
I know you are. And it's a tempting thought, too, if we had a private garage. Maybe, if we end up buying a house one day.
[ Because why wouldn't they? Wangji says the words less as a question and more as a possibility, suddenly thinking about it. ]
It'd be nicer than the apartment. [ Even with Wei Ying having brought life to it, the apartment still often feel sterile, and it's not a place they decided on together, it's a place that Wei Ying made into his home after the fact. He deserves to choose, too. ]
[ this was perfect if you were to ask Wei Ying, he could ask for no better of a proposal. and he will probably preface the story as such when he tells his siblings, when he tells anyone who might sit still enough to ask really.
settling against the seat, Wei Ying laughs, smiles over at Wangji and has a comment about maybe next time they go out on his lips when what is being said actually sinks it. yes, yes Wangji did just propose to him, they are getting married and it's forever and he knows that, but-- something about Wangji talking about getting a house, that he wants that with Wei Ying, has his breath catching in his throat.]
Lan Zhan.... you are so fucking perfect.
[ the words are awed, hushed and soft and marked by a squeeze of his fingers.]
... we could have a back yard and make a garden. Outdoor enclosure for the rabbits. Maybe enough room for a little lotus pond.
[ what he isn't planning it in his head right now. no. nope. not at all. ]
[ Wangji can easily imagine, twenty years from now, Wei Ying retelling the story for the umpteenth time, to anyone who would be willing to listen. To grand-children, maybe.
The thought warms Wangji's heart.
Despite everything, through it all, Wangji blinks in surprise at Wei Ying's words. He does not consider himself perfect in any way, shape, or form. ]
What did I do?
[ But then it clicks - he's never mentioned having thought of a house before, has he? It felt natural to him, but it's the first time he's talking about it to Wei Ying, and he doesn't know if it's something that Wei Ying is even considering, until he starts talking.
He's definitely considering it. Wangji's surprised looks turns into soft fondness as he drives. ]
We'd definitely need a garden. Of course, we need to consult Sizhui, but I think we could move out of the city. We could even build something, if we wanted.
[ for a moment, Wei Ying just sits there with his fingers tangled with Wangji's and watches his profile with more than a little bit of awe. there are times, like this, when he really has no idea how someone like Wangji decided he wanted to be with someone like himself. how someone who was so-- so full of adoration and kindness might settle for someone like Wei Ying. he knows that if he ever said that, Wangji would probably tie him to a chair and recite what he perceives to be his virtues but--
well, the thought still comes once in a while.
but he is getting better at knowing that no matter what, no matter what flaws the two of them possessed, they would never dull just how much devotion was there. Wei Ying squeezes Wangji's fingers again and laughs.]
You love me.
[ it sounds sure. it isn't a question (hasn't been a question ever, actually) which is why it is so easy for him to see this future with Wangji. can see them moving to somewhere a little quieter. can see everything unfolding before them so so easily. because anything with Wangji at his side would be easy.]
Mmm, we could. A place with more property than house, maybe?
[ Wangji could write a book about Wei Ying's virtues and qualities. They're not perceived, they're here and real and Wangji sees them every day, discovers new ones regularly.
Wangji, in comparison, is pretty cut-and-dry. Out of the two of them, he's the one that's lucky that Wei Ying stayed, that he wanted to be with him. Considering that Wangji has all his rules and his ways to live and he's boring and works so much. Wei Ying could have had enough of it very quickly, and Wangji is lucky he didn't.
Wangji swipes his thumb over Wei Ying's knuckles. ]
I do. Very much so.
[ If there's something Wei Ying is sure of, that's that. Wangji focuses on the road for a bit, driving them with his usual care for the laws.
He smiles, raising an eyebrow. ]
What would you want to do with the land, my love? [ Not a term of endearment he uses very often - he doesn't really uses any very often - but under the circumstances, it feels right, slipping out of his mouth without thought. ]

settling against the seat, Wei Ying laughs, smiles over at Wangji and has a comment about maybe next time they go out on his lips when what is being said actually sinks it. yes, yes Wangji did just propose to him, they are getting married and it's forever and he knows that, but-- something about Wangji talking about getting a house, that he wants that with Wei Ying, has his breath catching in his throat.]
Lan Zhan.... you are so fucking perfect.
[ the words are awed, hushed and soft and marked by a squeeze of his fingers.]
... we could have a back yard and make a garden. Outdoor enclosure for the rabbits. Maybe enough room for a little lotus pond.
[ what he isn't planning it in his head right now. no. nope. not at all. ]

We could even build something, if we wanted.

well, the thought still comes once in a while.
but he is getting better at knowing that no matter what, no matter what flaws the two of them possessed, they would never dull just how much devotion was there.
